A TRANSFORMATIVE CHILD NEEDS TO BE EDUCATED TODAY!

The international day of the African child, has been celebrated on June 16th every year since 1991.


Mbale District celebrated it on 18th July 2024 at Bungokho Subcounty Headquarters with the theme: Education to children in Africa: The time is now.
Government of Uganda under the NRM, embarked on universal primary education as a means into transformative and empowering children and  a means for accessing broad economic, social, political and cultural heritage attached.
Realistically, primary education is a powerful driver for realizing the millennium development goals and Sustainable Development goals.
Over 8.7m million pupils are currently registered under UPE today compared to three million in 1996.

Mbale district education department under the UPE program scores the following;
PUPILS:
*Enrolled no of boys: 34894
*Enrolled no of girls: 35931
*Total                         : 70815
TEACHERS:
*Female teachers.    : 574
*Male teachers.        : 484
*Total no                    : 1058
Whereas the numbers above reflect the efforts of both parents and teacher, there has been a number of challenges cutting across the sector for excellence.
*Lack of enough infrastructure coupled with large classes.
*High teacher-pupil ratio
*Poor policy design and implementation, poor teacher quality which is a function of poor teacher education and high school dropouts.

However the government of Uganda has improved the levels of literacy, skills for sustainable development goals.
Minimized the levels of social economic behavior leading to better living standards due to active participation in money economy.

The Woman Member of Parliament for Mbale District, Hon. Miriam Mukhaye Wangisi attended the celebrations at Bungokho Subcounty for the day of the African child. In her speech, she appealed to all mothers, to be an examplary to their children right from home so as to instill good behaviors.

"Mothers should be an example of good morals to their children and vis vasa", she echoed!
"Children, have you heard me very well, make sure you stay in school and avoid bad characters most especially this time of circumcision". A sessional calling to the children during this celebration lived her words.

Nakawala Naume, the RDC for Mbale District appreciated parents for the positive support towards children and ensuring they attain basic education under the NRM government.

Children are expected to be in school while parents give in to other necessities like food and books.

The NRM government introduced free education to all abled children in the country with the aim of attaining literacy, sustainable skills and self reliance in this generation.
Nakawala highlighted on government programs in the district as taking good progress most especially, PDM, Emyooga and YELP. She related good progress that has attracted successfully stories and money economy in households.

The district chairman, Mafabi Muhammad in his brief speech, earmarked on leadership with full participation citing the presence of several stakeholders during such gatherings.
His words were stunning to the organizers and implementing partners with credition of teamwork.

Guest of honor representative, Hon. Wanda Richard who also doubles as the area member of Parliament in Bungokho central in Mbale District, torched out the contributions teachers have laboured to create a meaningful society with educational diversity upholds and called on parents ro continue supporting their respectively.

The theme for today's celebrations was education for children in Africa: The time is now.
