SCHOOLS WITH BOARDING FACILITIES UNDERSCORED

The office of the president led by DRDC Nakawala Naume of Mbale District, yesterday together with representative from the ministry, Sentalo Alex and district inspector of schools, Walufu Asadi, had a monitoring exercise  in all boarding facilities to assess the general hygiene and sanitation, dietary and safety measures.

The team traversed the entire district most especially in boarding schools with certificate awards, secondary and primary. The district inspector of schools for Mbale, Walufu Asadi during the activity, emphasized safety and general hygiene as key elements.

Sentalo Alex, a representative from the ministry grilled the management of schools on dietary changes and whether the food menus are effective.

The exercise included Nyondo primary teachers core, Nabumali high school, One heart One mind, Nabumali boarding primary school, Busiu central college, Maumbe Mukhwana memorial institute, Mbale school for the deaf, Joshua primary school, St. Thomas secondary, Lulwanda children's home, Makhai day and boarding primary school, Nuru Islamic primary and secondary fully assessed ending the exercise for the district.

In the general assessment, safety measures, hygiene and sanitation, welfare and safe spaces in schools were scored below average prompting the team to outline procedural guidelines with immediate effect on recommendations in some schools.
Mbale district education officer, Mrs. Musungu Lydia Constance noted that schools below average should close the boarding facilities.
Musungu says that those that have excelled have key elements put in place and trained staff on usage, she said!
The team also found out the following challenges re-carrying from the previous scores,
* Water shortfall 
*General hygiene still lacking 
*Fire extinguishers not enough 
*Exit doors lacking

However Nabumali boarding primary school stood out with less two elements lacking followed by Joshua primary school for primary section and secondary section, Nabumali high school had an average score much as the boys wing lacked fire extinguishers for safety and exit doors. It was evident the school management has progressively improved from the last outing.
