CORDIAD, A TALKING LANDMARK TO FARMERS IN MBALE DISTRICT.
Community Perspective@2025
Whereas Cordiad in mbale district started in November 2023 and working with production, natural resources and administration in all the lower local governments. In Uganda it's over 26 years now with programmes focusing on humanitarian assistance, sustainable agri-food systems, health care, and education.
Uganda is a young country. About 78% of the population is below the age of 30. However, this enormous potential remains largely underutilised. The high poverty rates are primarily a rural phenomenon, where large families rely on farming as their main source of income
Musibikha Juliet, on behalf of Matolotolo farmers group in buwalasi parish, busiu sub county says the extension services at the Sub county have registered big turnout for farmers with better yields.
"The yields are better in terms of harvests" she said!
The group has also started small savings which is regarded as an achievement in the short run but lining on progressive hope.
"We need to come together as one voice to expand on farmers network with quality produce for quality assurance.
She says they are growing two crops apparently namely, soya and ground nuts but prior to that, they wish to add maize and beans so that money is tapped on the farming scale.
Never the less, she pointed out a few challenges indicating short cycles of rains causing poor sale value in the market hence affecting farmers morale during farming.
The group intends to open a bank savings account leading to bigger savings which could guarantee them with big loans.
" We want to expand the farming from 7 acres to 12 acres and also acquire a tractor but if our savings are bigger"
She appealed to community members to adequately involve in agro economy since Cordiad has significant strides on modern farming approaches.
Musibikha Juliet from buwalasi parish, Busiu Sub county shared a successful story amidst biting challenges, citing improved household income, adequate food security, healthy life and Networking grid for better farm exposure.
Khawaga Martin, the Agriculture Officer during the exercise, acknowledged the presence of Cordiad and it's roles as timely since the farmers in Busiu Sub county are working towards improving yields and stabilising the household incomes through model farming aspects.
The senior fisheries officer, Okoche Joseph emphasized quality service for high quantity reaping with the support from Cordiad. He appealed to farmers to embrace extension services rendered at the sub county to be able to have better farming and register the money economy at household levels.
Wesamoyo Sam, a representative from Cordiad extended gratitude to all participants for leaving other engagements and give time for meeting, As Cordiad, the program is here for 5 years and we have already moved since it's Inception.
Our targets are to support the extension staff with prioritized assistance so that their presence to farmers is result oriented. As for those with un registered land ownership, the project has plans to all the farmers register their land like what is taking place in Wanale, Budwale and Busano as sample areas.
