Dissemination Meeting For Bugisu Region Stakeholders
Stakeholders from the healthcare department in the 9 districts of Bugisu and Sebei region had disseminations review meeting on how best the persons with albinism can have an inclusive community participation and lead productive, safe and dignified lives.
The district health officers, facility in charges and nursing officers working directly with persons with albinism attended the meeting in lukhobo hall Mbale district.
The executive director for the source of the Nile Union of persons with albinism, in his remarks highlighted the contributions of persons with albinism in the world even when discrimination has affected many.
Ogenga Peter in his submissions related the efforts towards building a cohesion to empower persons with albinism and create an enabling environment that provides for equal opportunities and protection of their lives.
One of the key areas is to improve the quality of life for persons with albinism in Uganda with a strategy for the prevention of skin cancer and promotion of social inclusion.
Dr. Ngobi working with albinism in both regions says the Bugisu sub region receive skin cancer prevention services, including popular access to customised sunscreen lotions and skin cancer management.
These training aims at empowering and developing the capacity of health workers with techniques to handle the health care of persons living with albinism.
The Elgon foundation for persons with albinism executive director says the enrollment stands at 390 though more are yet to be captured on the foundation cluster in the region.
Nekesa Elizabeth stressed that some of the challenges are discrimination from communities where albinism is predominant because of the colour. Our aim is to bridge the gap between the people with albinism and the health workers on how best health care can be reached without segregation.
They are a lot life changing facts with persons with albinism due to environmental exposure.
She resonated on call to ensure proper health care is given in regard to their well-being.
The deputy chief administrative officer, Mbale district in her closing remarks thanked the organisers that is Elgon foundation for persons with albinism for the drastic efforts towards restoring and maintaining the health of albinism.
She extended gratitude to the government of Uganda for endless support for the marginalised groups like the people living with albinism.
As a district, we dedicated our support to the population over 28.000 in the entire district minus those with disabilities.
We should not discriminate against anyone unless on conditional grants which have strings attached.
Her appeal goes to the government for more funding since the population had greatly increased with diverse demand, she promised full support to the cluster organisations working with albinism most especially the EFPA.
