FARMERS TRAINED ON HIGH VALUE VEGETABLES & FRUITS

Over 50 farmers selected from 14 subcounties and three Town Councils in Mbale District had a field day in Tubii village, Buwangadya parish in Budwale Subcounty at Bukingala primary school today. The field day converged farmers across the district, community duelers, both political and technical staff mostly from the production department.

Namukowa Bernard, the extension worker at Budwale Subcounty while giving remarks noted that the selected farmers were meant to be;
* Showcased how extension services are done in the district.
* Showcased technologies on irrigation schemes supported by Ugift on micro scale farming.
* Production of high value vegetables and fruits
* Other farming interventions on the farm include Soil and water conservation measures, coffee and banana production.

* 4 acreage model farming strategy for sustainable development goals.
Enterprises grown: Passion fruits, strawberry, watermelon, apples, spinach, tree tomatoes among others.

In addition to the above, Mugoya Muhammad's resilience in farming  on 4 acre farmland which was toured, seating a variety of hotcultre Enterprise,
Mugoya narrated an inception story highlighting the life background into today's successful agricultural economy with high profits.

 He has managed to supply his products to Mt Elgon hotel and Sun Rise Hotel Mbale for ready market.
On 4 acreage, Mugoya says he is able to collect over 3.5 million shillings per month with the help of the irrigation system supported by the government under a shared cost of 70% with the capacity of 20. 000 litre storage that boosts his continuous farming through the year with enough water supply.
Mugoya extended gratitude to production department and the district leadership at large for choosing Budwale Subcounty and his farm in particular to showcase varieties today.
With his unique enterprises grown, he has been visited by different media houses like NTV and New vision to share the back track on farming and it's benefits.


However, the challenges affecting him are the poor market prices and in accessible transport caused by  heavy rains damaging roads due to un predictable weather.
"The poor road network hinders easy access to the market for farm inputs and buyers".

He appealed to the government through the production department, to amplify his call and reach out for assistance.

DPMO for Mbale District local government, Wanakina George Dawson in his brief remarks thanked the Mugoya for being tolerant and achieving this level of farming which is now recognized in the region by other model farmers.


Wanakina called upon the participants to demonstrate what they have learnt to transform their enterprises respectfully. Several programs like PDM, Emyooga and YLP are sustainable and transformative economies to change lives at household levels as aided by the NRM government.

"Embrace government programs to improve lives by tapping money at household level in your various parishes", he said!

With a total number of 1900 households actively participating in agriculture, Budwale Subcounty's main activity is hot culture farming which includes both commercial and substance. Mbale City is the main entry market, for the producers from the Budwale and neighboring subcounties sharing the hilly range in farming.

Mafabi Muhammad, the district chairman hailed Mukoya for the outstanding performance in changing lives among the communities in Budwale Subcounty for the good practices he has exhibited towards modern farming with new technologies.
"With such efforts, farmers are confident we attain good governance.
Mafabi called upon the selected farmers to copy skills and improve their yields for better days ahead.
He said Mukoya has the capacity to go places with this kind on innovation into agriculture.
He pledged to work closely with all model farmers throughout for the good development of Mbale District. Said the chairman!

Nakawala Naume, the Resident District Commissioner for Mbale District while making her closing remarks today at Bukingala primary school during the field trip, emphasized corporations between parents and school management, women to respect their families upon receiving funds and  continuous access to community  and other circular roads to be worked on when finances prevail.
